Light at the End of the Tunnel: The Symbolic Meaning Through a Physical Experience
“Light at the End of the Tunnel,” a term we often use to describe the end of an unpleasant situation we are facing at the moment. After biking through two abandoned tunnels, this symbolic term had a whole new meaning: We must understand the darkness of the tunnel to reach the light at the end.
As we biked into the abandoned tunnel, I was blinded by the darkness. The only visible entity was the faint light at the end. The wind gushed in from the other end with dust particles flowing into my face. Water dripped from the ceiling, landing on anyone who crossed paths, and the sound of it hitting the puddles on the ground echoed throughout the tunnel.
My friends biked ahead while I stayed close behind. It felt as if the darkness was chasing after me, forcing me to catch up with them. About one-fourth of the way in, I suddenly realized that I was still wearing my sunglasses, which caused my inability to see clearly in the dark. The tunnel turned out to be lighter than what I saw before taking off my sunglasses. Even in the dark, a change in “perspective” could help lighten an “unpleasant” situation.
About halfway in the tunnel, I started to question if this light has gotten any brighter at all…
